Moonrise Loop

Moonrise Loop is a 6.4 km circuit through the Western Sydney Parklands at Abbotsbury, climbing to a ridge that looks back across the Sydney skyline. It is on-lead the whole way, and the resident kangaroos are the reason why.

The walk. Six point four kilometres as a full loop, graded moderate, and most people take an hour and a half to two hours. The surface changes constantly: paved concrete in places, mown grass in others, dirt track through the Cumberland Plain Woodland remnants. A few steep pinches on the ridge climb make this a real workout rather than a stroll, so a dog that is happy on flat suburban footpaths may find the back half harder than expected.

The rules. Dogs must be on-lead for the entire loop. Greater Sydney Parklands manages the site through the Western Sydney Parklands Trust, and the lead rule here is about wildlife rather than crowds: eastern grey kangaroos, wallabies and goannas all live along the route, and fox control programs operate across the parklands. Stay on the marked trails. Dogs are also kept 10 metres clear of playgrounds and play equipment.

Water and shade. There are drinking fountains along the route and picnic shelters with charcoal barbecues near the Moonrise Lookout and the adjacent Lizard Log area. The ridge itself is exposed, so on a warm day the shade comes in patches rather than continuously. Carry water for both of you.

Hazards. This is inland bushland and snakes are active through the warmer months, which is another argument for staying on the formed track. The hills also mean an unfit dog can overheat faster than you expect.

Getting there. The main entry is Saxony Road, Abbotsbury. Parking is straightforward at Lizard Log and along Border Road at the Sugarloaf Ridge entrance, and there are toilets at the trailheads. Public transport to the trailhead is limited, so most people drive. The parklands close to traffic at sunset, so time your return.

Nearby with the dogs. Parx Coffee House is the closest coffee. For genuine off-lead running afterwards, William Lawson Park Dog Park at Prospect is fenced, and Born to Brew at Wetherill Park is an easy detour on the way home.

When to go. Early morning on a weekday, before 8 am in summer. The precinct fills up on weekend afternoons, the ridge gets hot, and the light on the skyline is better early anyway. Good for big runners who need hills rather than distance.
