Mistover

Mistover is the cottage on a 32-hectare working Galloway beef stud at 1840 Murchison Highway, Yolla, about 20 minutes inland from Burnie and Wynyard in North-West Tasmania. It is a two-storey stone cottage with an open fireplace on a property of pasture, bush tracks, creeks and dams, and dogs are welcomed by prior arrangement with clear, house-level rules.

Pets stay by prior arrangement only, and the rules are firm: dogs are restricted to the downstairs living areas, stay off all furniture and out of the bedrooms, and you bring your own pet covers, rugs and bedding. No pet fee is published, so confirm cost and conditions with the host when you arrange the stay. Outdoors, the property's size gives plenty of room to stretch, but this is a working stud with resident farm dogs and Galloway cattle, so a dog that cannot behave around livestock is the wrong fit.

The vibe

The cottage is self-contained and casual, with the kind of hosts guests single out for being generous with local knowledge. The property's dam is home to a resident platypus that is sometimes seen at dusk, and the setting between the Tarkine, Cradle Mountain and Stanley makes it a practical base for a North-West loop rather than a single-destination stop.

Getting there and parking

Yolla sits on the Murchison Highway between Burnie and Wynyard, an easy drive from the Bass Highway coast. Parking is on site and includes an accessible space. Stock up in Burnie or Wynyard before you head inland; Yolla itself is a small farming community.

Close by with the dogs

For a beach run, Somerset Dog Beach is the nearest dedicated off-lead stretch of sand, about 25 minutes away. In Wynyard, Lemon Tree Providore covers coffee and provisions, and if you want a coastal motel alternative with dedicated pet rooms, the Waterfront Wynyard sits right on the river mouth.

Max: Cattle, creeks and dams mean eyes on the dog at all times. Keep the lead on near stock and water, and let them run on open pasture instead.
