Somerset Dog Beach

Somerset Beach runs along the Bass Highway between Burnie and Wynyard, and it is one of the more generous dog beaches on the North-West coast: a long off-leash stretch plus a clearly marked on-leash section for the busier end near the Cam River.

The rules. Dogs can run off-leash 24/7 on the beach between Woody Point and Arthur Street. From Arthur Street east to the Cam River, dogs must be on-lead between 10am and 6pm (off-lead outside those hours). Effective control applies everywhere, meaning your dog needs to come back when called even in the off-leash zone. Pick up and bin or carry out all waste.

What's there. Waste bins are provided along the foreshore, though it is worth carrying your own bags as a backup. There is little natural shade, so bring water for your dog, especially in summer.

Getting there. Somerset sits right on the Bass Highway about five minutes west of Burnie; take the Somerset exit and follow signs to the beach. Street parking runs along the Esplanade. Local Metro Tasmania buses stop on the main street, a short walk from the sand.

The water. The beach is at its widest and best for walking at low tide; the sandy area narrows noticeably as the tide comes in, so check tide times if you are planning a long walk.

Nearby with the dogs. The Vault Cafe in Wynyard has a small outdoor deck overlooking Gutteridge Gardens and the Inglis River that suits dogs on the footpath side. For a stay, Glenbrook House and Cottage nearby is genuinely pet-friendly, welcoming dogs of any size with no extra fee.

Early morning or evening is the easiest time to get the beach to yourselves; weekend mornings in summer and school holidays draw the crowds. If the main access points near Arthur Street are busy, head further west toward Woody Point for more room to let your dog off-lead.
