South Burnie Dog Beach

South Burnie Dog Beach is the off-leash stretch of sand east of the boat ramp on the South Burnie foreshore, on Tasmania's north-west coast just south of the port. It is a wide, open beach inside a busy recreation precinct, and the reason to come is the combination of room to run off-leash and easy access straight off the road.

The rules. Dogs are off-leash on the sand only, and only east of the boat ramp. They must stay under effective control at all times. Dogs are prohibited north of the Coastal Pathway and west of the boat ramp, the zone between the yacht club and the ramp, and the Coastal Pathway itself is on-lead, so leads go on the moment you step up off the sand. Tasmanian dogs must be registered with the council, and straying into a prohibited stretch can draw a fine.

What's there. Bins are provided along the foreshore for cleanup. There are no toilets or water taps directly on the beach itself; the nearest facilities sit further along the Coastal Pathway toward Burnie. Bring your own water on a warm day.

Getting there. The beach is on the Old Bass Highway in South Burnie, with limited off-street parking on the highway shoulder and direct walk-on access to the sand. It is an easy detour heading east from the Burnie CBD, and a natural stop for anyone riding or walking the Coastal Pathway.

The water and terrain. This is open Bass Strait coast: a wide, flat beach with plenty of room for a long shoreline walk. The water runs cool and the wind can be brisk this far north, so pick a calmer day for a swim. Low to mid tide gives the most space; at high tide the gap between water and pathway tightens.

When to go. A calm, clear morning is best, both for the swim and to get ahead of the boat-ramp and pathway traffic. Weekday mornings are quietest in what is otherwise a working hub of yacht and outrigger clubs. Good for big dogs that need room to stretch out.
