South Burnie Dog Beach

South Burnie Dog Beach is the off-leash stretch of sand east of the boat ramp on the South Burnie foreshore, just south of the Burnie port on Tasmania's north-west coast. It is a wide, open beach inside a busy recreation precinct, and the draw is the combination of genuine room to run off-lead and access straight off the road.

Leash status

Under Burnie City Council's dog zones, dogs are off-leash on the sand only and only east of the boat ramp, under effective control the whole time. Everything toward the port is off limits: dogs are prohibited west of the ramp, in the stretch between the yacht club and the ramp, and north of the Coastal Pathway. The pathway itself is on-lead, so leads go back on the moment you step up off the sand. Tasmanian dogs need to be registered with the council, and straying into a prohibited stretch can draw a fine, so get your bearings from the ramp before anyone unclips.

Water and terrain

This is open Bass Strait coast: a wide, flat beach with plenty of room for a long shoreline walk and a decent fetch session. The water runs cool and the wind can be brisk on this coast, so pick a calmer day for an actual swim. Low to mid tide opens the most sand; at high tide the gap between water and pathway tightens considerably. Bins are provided along the foreshore, but there are no toilets or water taps on the beach itself, with facilities sitting further along the Coastal Pathway toward Burnie, so bring your own water.

Getting there and parking

The beach sits on the Old Bass Highway in South Burnie, with limited off-street parking on the highway shoulder and walk-on access to the sand. It is an easy detour heading east from the Burnie CBD, and a natural stop for anyone riding or walking the Coastal Pathway with a dog.

When to go

Early morning is the quietest and usually calmest window, before the sea breeze builds. Weekends and fine summer days bring more dogs and more beach users to the precinct, so if your dog needs space, go early or on an overcast weekday. Winter walks here are brisk but often completely empty.

Cooee Creek Dog Beach is up the coast as a second off-lead option, and the on-lead Coastal Pathway makes a good warm-up or cool-down walk.
