Fish on the Edge

Fish on the Edge is a licensed seafood restaurant and takeaway on the waterfront at Shop 4, 36 Main Road, Wivenhoe, just along the shore from central Burnie. It is the kind of place the dog is genuinely part of the plan: order at the counter, grab an outdoor table on the water and eat while your dog supervises the seagulls.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome in the outdoor seating areas only, in line with food safety rules for the indoor spaces. The outdoor tables sit right on the water, which keeps a dog entertained while you eat. Staff are often good for a water bowl, but bringing your own travel bowl is the safe bet when the deck is busy.

Worth knowing

The kitchen covers the Tasmanian fish-and-chip classics and a bit more: battered flake, seafood chowder, calamari, oysters, fish cakes and the macadamia salmon that regulars single out. It is also well set up for coeliacs, with gluten-free options across the menu, and sells fresh raw seafood and ready-made meals to take home. Wheelchair access and the waterfront outlook make the outdoor section the drawcard. Hours run 8am to 7pm Tuesday to Thursday and 9am to 8pm Friday and Saturday, with Monday and Sunday closed, so plan a weekday or Saturday visit rather than a Sunday drive.

Getting there and parking

There is free off-street parking on site, with street parking along Main Road as a backup, so the car-to-table walk is short even with a dog in tow. Wivenhoe sits on the western edge of Burnie, a few minutes from the city centre.

Close by with the dogs

The South Burnie Dog Beach is the nearest off-lead swim and an easy drive back along the coast, and dogs are allowed on-lead on designated Burnie beaches and the Coastal Pathway. If you want a coffee stop to go with it, Infuse Coffee Roasters in South Burnie is nearby, and Ocean View Motel and Caravan Park takes travelling dogs in the same patch of the coast.
