Burnie Coastal Pathway

In Wivenhoe, a suburb of Burnie, the coastal path runs right beside Wivenhoe Beach, and the sand north of the Bass Highway abutment is an off-leash area. That split is the whole point of coming here.

Leads and the off-lead area

Burnie City Council keeps the sealed Burnie Coastal Pathway on-lead only. Once you are on the sand north of the highway abutment, dogs can come off lead as long as they stay under effective control.

Shorebirds use this coast, so call your dog away from any birds on the sand.

The walk

The path is flat concrete and asphalt, shared with cyclists, with open views across Bass Strait. It is part of the longer coastal pathway, so you can keep going along the shore if you want more distance.

There is little shade and little in the way of dog water on this stretch. Bring a bottle and a bowl, especially after a run on the sand.

Wind is the main factor here, so pick a calm day. It suits dogs that love the beach and owners who want a paved approach.
