The Sunray Motor Inn in Wilsonton has gone further than most motels on dog-friendly setup, with rooms built specifically around having a dog on the road with you.

The pet policy. Pets must be approved in advance by calling the motel direct (07 4634 2200) or emailing ahead, do not book pet stays sight unseen through a third-party site. There are two dedicated, non-carpeted pet-friendly rooms, located right next to a fenced dog exercise yard. Only well-behaved small to medium-sized dogs are accepted, and there's an extra per-night fee for pets.

The place. Guests rate the rooms as clean and comfortable with a spacious bathroom, and reviewers regularly flag the on-site dog area as a genuine drawcard, not just a policy line.

Good for owners road-tripping with a dog who want a hard-floor room and yard access on-site rather than a walk to the nearest patch of grass. Call ahead to lock in one of the two pet rooms, they're limited.
