Weddell Caravan Park

Weddell Caravan Park is a private, seasonal bush campground on a 150-acre rural property at 1200 Bees Creek Road in the Northern Territory, about half an hour from Darwin and 15 minutes from Palmerston. It is a hosted stay booked through Hipcamp: quiet, shady paddocks with a country outlook over neighbouring horses and cattle, powered and water-hookup sites for caravans, RVs and campers, and basic facilities rather than resort amenities. Dogs are welcome, and that combination makes it one of the more relaxed dog bases in the Darwin rural area.

The park's own posts cap it at a maximum of two dogs per site or pet-friendly cabin booking, and it advertises designated pet-friendly cabins alongside the camping sites, so it is worth asking the host directly about a cabin if you are not towing. On the ground, standard rural pet etiquette applies: keep dogs on a lead in communal areas, keep them secure around neighbouring livestock, and pick up waste straight away. Pets are not allowed inside the shared amenities, including the park's silver bullet amenities van. There are no pet supplies sold on site, so bring everything, and confirm any pet fee with the host on Hipcamp when you book rather than assuming a rate.

Worth knowing

Access is down a quiet dead-end dirt road off Bees Creek Road, which most vehicles manage fine in the dry season, but unsealed surfaces can deteriorate in the wet. Campers report biting midges come out heavily around dusk, so plan the evening walk earlier and keep repellent handy. The Top End heat is hard on paws, and crocodiles are present in natural waterways, so never let your dog near the edge of a billabong or creek. Berry Springs Nature Reserve is about 15 minutes away; check signage before entering, as dogs have restrictions around the water holes and picnic areas.

The back roads around Bees Creek and Weddell give you dirt-road walking on a lead, and for supplies Noonamah, Humpty Doo and Coolalinga are all a short drive up the highway. If you want a second base in the region, Coolalinga Tourist Park is a leafy pet-friendly option within walking distance of the Coolalinga shops, and Robbie Robbins Reserve Van Park sits closer to Darwin.
