Crystal creek ranch

Crystal Creek Ranch is a rustic, off-grid camping property on Booka Road in Upper Crystal Creek, backing straight onto Springbrook National Park in the NSW Tweed hinterland. It is bush camping with its own stretch of crystal-clear creek frontage, and dogs are welcome by request on the sites.

Well-behaved dogs are allowed on the camping sites, with the arrangement made through the host at booking since Hipcamp listings can vary on the fine print. The property runs chickens and cattle, so a dog that cannot be controlled around livestock is the one thing that will spoil this, and there is no published pet fee or weight limit to fall back on. Bring everything: no dog bowls, no potable water on site, no power.

The setup

This is unpowered bush camping with simple facilities, including an outdoor shower, and campers mention bunk-bed style shelters, cabins and a fridge among the offerings, so check with the host what is actually running when you book. The drawcard is the creek, with swimming holes right at the sites, and the national park boundary on the fence line for walkers. It suits owners after genuine isolation rather than facilities.

Getting there and parking

A 4WD is strongly recommended. The access road involves creek crossings that rain can close, and the property is not suited to low-clearance cars. Once in, you park at your assigned site.

Close by with the dogs

Murwillumbah is about 20 minutes away for supplies, and the riverside House of Gabriel at Tumbulgum is a dog-friendly outdoor table on the way through. If the ranch is full or the creek is up, Hillcrest Mountain View Retreat is in the same valley, and Tweed River Motel is the town fallback.
