Terramungamine Reserve

Terramungamine Reserve is a free, informal riverside camping ground on the north bank of the Macquarie River, about 12km north of Dubbo off Burraway Road. For dog owners on the road it is an easy yes: no fees, no bookings, and dogs are welcome across the whole camp. It also sits beside the Terramungamine Rock Grooves, a significant Wiradjuri site where the Tubbagah people shaped more than 150 grooves into the sandstone.

Dogs at the reserve

Dogs are permitted at the camp provided they stay on a lead and under control at all times, which protects both the wildlife along the riverbank and the cultural site nearby. There are no pet-restricted zones and no size limits listed, and clean-up is expected like anywhere else. The lead rule matters here more than at most camps: the reserve is bushland with native birds and river life, so an unleashed dog is a problem for everyone.

The place

Expect roughly 30 unsealed sites spread through the trees, suitable for tents, campervans and caravans, with flushing toilets and picnic tables. It is a rustic, low-key camp rather than a facility park: no cabins, no camp kitchen. The river sets the pace with fishing, birdwatching and walks along the bank, and the sunset views get regular mentions from campers.

Worth knowing

Water on site is non-potable, so bring all drinking water for yourself and the dog, plus food. The access road and parking can be dusty in dry weather and muddy after rain, so check conditions if you are towing. Overnight camping only applies, and the sites fill quickly in peak periods, so arrive early.

If the reserve is full or you want powered sites and cabins, the NRMA Dubbo Holiday Park is a pet-friendly fallback in town. The Tracker Riley Cycleway in Dubbo is a good on-lead leg-stretcher, and Alchemy on Victoria makes an easy dog-friendly coffee stop on the way through.
