Norval Park Beach Camp

Norval Park Beach Camp is a rustic coastal bush campground at Norval Park, near Yandaran, roughly 40 minutes north of Bundaberg. The draw for dog owners is simple: relaxed bush camping behind the dunes with direct sandy beach access and plenty of room to spread out.

The rules. Dogs are allowed at the campground and on the beach. They must be under control and are often required on leash, especially around other campers. You must clean up after your dog immediately. Camping permits are required and booked through Bundaberg Regional Council.

The campground. Sites are informal, unpowered bush sites with plenty of native vegetation and tree shade. Amenities are basic: picnic tables and toilets, with some campers reporting flush facilities. There is no drinking water on site, so bring everything you need for drinking, cooking and washing. Campfires are generally permitted in designated areas or fire rings, but always check current fire bans before lighting up.

Getting there. The final stretch is gravel and conditions vary.

• Head north from Bundaberg on Rosedale Road.
• Turn into Yandaran Road and pass through the Yandaran township.
• Cross the railway line and turn left onto South Littabella Road.
• Follow for about 12 km as it becomes gravel Norval Park Road. The gravel can be sandy in parts.

The beach. The beach is unpatrolled and strong currents are possible if dogs venture in for a swim. Watch for marine stingers and washed-up debris including fishing line, particularly after storms. Four-wheel drives use the beach, so keep your dog close and under control. Native wildlife is present throughout the surrounding bush.

When to go. Aim for the cooler, drier months when the bush shade is a genuine comfort and marine stingers are less likely. Stock up on all supplies and water in Bundaberg before you drive out. Yandaran offers only basic conveniences, with Rosedale a bit further on for country pub meals and extra services.
