It sleeps up to four, with a kitchen, laundry and a private garden setting, and the city centre is a two-minute drive down the hill. The single reason a dog owner looks twice: the Mount Melville Reserve bushwalks begin at the property boundary.

Some accommodation directories state the property does not allow pets at all, while other regional guides describe it as pet-friendly by prior arrangement only. There is no published pet fee, size limit or indoor policy either way. Email or call the host before booking, state your dog's size and your dates, and get the arrangement in writing. If pets are not approved, this is not the stay for you, so verify first and book second.

The vibe

Quiet, tucked into the hillside and practical, with safe private on-site parking. Step outside and you are on the reserve tracks among the birdlife, which is the whole appeal. Do not assume the private garden is fully fenced: its fencing status is not publicly listed, so assess it yourself on arrival before letting your dog out unattended. Keep your dog leashed on the reserve tracks unless you have confirmed otherwise.

Close by with the dogs

A short drive gets you to Middleton Beach Dog Beach for a proper off-leash run and a saltwater swim. In town, Dome Cafe Albany and Gourmandise and Co both welcome dogs at outdoor tables. If the arrangement falls through, Acclaim Albany Holiday Park is a park-style alternative in the same city.

Pepsi: Bush trails at the front door and a dog beach down the road. Confirm the host actually takes dogs before you get excited about either.

Worth knowing
