For a couple with one well behaved dog who want a quiet base among the vineyards, the extra step is worth it.

The rules are clear and worth agreeing upfront. Pets are allowed only on prior arrangement with the host, with a $30 pet fee, and your dog must be supervised at all times. Dogs stay off the bed and the couch, so pack your own pet bed, because one is not provided. The cabin sleeps a strict two people, and the pet needs to be part of the booking conversation from the start.

What you get in return is a custom-built cabin with real attention to detail: an indoor fireplace for cool Fleurieu evenings, a vineyard outlook with sunset views, and an outdoor bath on the deck. Note the bath sits on the road-facing side, so swimmers wanting privacy should bring togs or wait for dusk. South Australia's fire danger season, generally November through April, restricts outdoor fires, so plan around the indoor fireplace in summer.

Getting there and parking

McLaren Flat sits about 40 minutes south of Adelaide, reached via the Southern Expressway and Main Road through McLaren Vale.
