Forest Retreat is a small bed and breakfast in quiet forest surrounds a short way from the Margaret River townsite, hosted by Meg and Steve, and it is one of the genuinely easy dog stays in the region: dogs of any size are welcome, they are allowed inside, and there is no pet fee.

The setup goes well beyond tolerating dogs. A large dog bed and a doggie treat are waiting on arrival, though bringing a familiar cushion is suggested for dogs who like their own smell. The outdoor kitchen and deck area is enclosed, which gives you a secure space where the dog can settle while you cook and eat. The one firm rule is that dogs must not be left unattended on the property, so plan wineries and cave visits around a time when someone can stay back or the dog comes along where allowed. The listing welcomes dogs but not cats. There are walking tracks close to the property, so morning and evening lead walks run straight from the door.

The place

This is a guest-suite style stay rather than a whole house, which suits couples travelling with one or two dogs rather than a big pack. The forest setting keeps things quiet at night and the townsite, with its cafes, breweries and the river mouth, is only a short drive away.

Out with the dog

For an off-lead run, the Brookfield Dog Park is the town's dedicated fenced space, and Blue Ginger Fine Foods is a good stop for picnic supplies on the way back. If you decide you want more room to roam, Redgate Forest Retreat at Witchcliffe offers self-catering houses on acreage with fenced yards and dogs welcome.
