Discovery Parks - Mackay

Discovery Parks Mackay is a big, family-style holiday park on Harbour Road at Mackay Harbour, with a swimming pool, water park, mini golf, a jumping pillow and its own lake on site. For travelling dog owners it earns its place on the itinerary two ways: pets are allowed on the powered and unpowered caravan and camping sites, and selected cabins are designated pet-friendly, some with screened decks where a dog can sit outside with you.

Dogs at Discovery Parks Mackay

The rules are the chain-wide standard. Pets need approval at the time of booking and must be booked into a pet-friendly cabin category, because dogs are strictly not permitted in the standard cabins. On sites and around the park, dogs stay on a lead outside your own pitch and are kept out of communal facilities such as the camp kitchen, pool and amenities blocks. Clean up after your dog and expect limits on how many pets you can bring. Sources disagree on whether a cabin pet fee applies, so confirm fees, size limits and pet numbers with the park when you book rather than assuming.

Worth knowing

The park sits close to the Mackay Marina precinct, about ten minutes from the CBD and the airport, so it doubles as a base for reef-bound travellers and a stopover for grey nomads doing the coast. Note that the beaches near the park are on-leash rather than off-leash: Mackay Regional Council lists Harbour Beach and Lamberts Beach as leash-required, so a midday swim-with-the-dog session is not on the cards here. The council's true off-leash beach windows, 5am to 8am and 5pm to 8pm daily, belong to spots like Northern Far Beach in East Mackay and Bucasia Beach further north.

While you're out there

For a proper run, Gooseponds Dog Park and the Mackay Off Lead Fenced Dog Park in North Mackay are the reliable fenced options, both an easy drive from the harbour. Scarlett Sand Banks at Slade Point adds a coastal walk with a story, and Woodman's Axe Espresso Bar covers the morning coffee stop. Max: book the pet cabin category by name, not just any cabin. The park turns away dogs in standard cabins, and the off-leash beach windows are early and late, so plan walks around them.
