Woodman's Axe Espresso Bar Mackay

Woodman's Axe Espresso Bar, known locally as Woodie's, is a busy specialty-coffee cafe on the corner of Gordon and Gregory Streets in central Mackay. Dogs are welcome at the outdoor tables, and the cafe advertises itself outright as dog friendly, with staff who have a genuine reputation for looking after four-legged visitors in the Queensland heat.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome in the shaded outdoor and footpath seating only, not indoors, in line with food-safety rules. The alfresco area is roomy enough for a dog to settle beside your table without blocking the path, and staff will often put down a water bowl unprompted, with puppuccinos and local dog treats part of the routine. The vibe and the menu

Coffee is the draw, with rotating single-origin pour-overs alongside a seasonal, Asian-influenced breakfast and brunch menu: smashed avo on sourdough, gluten-free toast, the brekkie wrap, the ham and cheese croissant and acai bowls, with solid vegetarian and vegan options and oat milk behind the counter. Hours run from 5:30am on weekdays, 6am Saturday and 6:30am Sunday, closing early afternoon, so it suits a post-walk coffee rather than a late one.

Getting there and parking

The cafe is at Shop 6, 47 Gordon Street, opposite the Nissan dealership, with free street and off-street parking in the surrounding blocks. Grab an outdoor table early on weekends, because the shaded spots go fast once the brunch crowd lands. The Pioneer River foreshore walk is a flat leg-stretch a short stroll away, and for an off-leash run the Gooseponds dog park or the fenced off-lead park in North Mackay are a short drive. The Botanic Gardens Cafe is the other garden-side coffee option in town.
