Botanic Gardens Cafe

Botanic Gardens Cafe sits inside the Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens on Lagoon Street, and it is the rare garden cafe that makes leashed dogs genuinely part of the visit: outdoor tables look over the lagoon, and the gardens themselves are an on-lead walk waiting to happen before or after brunch.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome on lead at the outdoor seating, but not indoors, as this is a working food service venue. Staff sometimes put a water bowl out, but bring your own to be safe on a warm Mackay morning. Pick up after your dog; bins are provided at the garden entrances. Keep the lead short near the lagoon edge, where the path narrows in spots and there is no barrier between the tables and the water.

The vibe and the food

The cafe is known for its lagoon views and an unhurried garden-terrace feel, with eggs benedict, fettuccine and a bakery cabinet built on scones, cakes and slices like the house cherry ripe slice. There is a kids menu and a solid spread of vegetarian and vegan options alongside the coffee and teas.

Getting there and hours

The cafe is at 9 Lagoon Street, West Mackay, with ample free parking at the gardens' visitor entrance and an easy paved walk in; the precinct is wheelchair accessible. It trades Wednesday to Friday from 9am to 2pm and weekends from 8am to 3pm, and closes Monday and Tuesday. Weekday mornings are the quiet window; weekends bring the brunch rush.

Close by with the dogs

More than six kilometres of paved and gravel paths wind through the gardens, all strictly on-lead, and swimming in the lagoons is off limits. For an off-lead run before your coffee, the Gooseponds Dog Park in North Mackay is a short drive. In town, Woodman's Axe Espresso Bar is the city coffee alternative.
