Dubbo Midstate Caravan Park

Dubbo Midstate Caravan Park, now trading as Dubbo Holiday Park, sits at 21 Bourke Street on the northern side of town, and it is one of the more practical dog-friendly stops on the Newell Highway run between Melbourne and Brisbane. Dogs of any size are welcome on the sites, and a set of pet-friendly cabins means even non-van travellers can overnight with the dog.

The usual park courtesy applies: leashed in common areas, mess picked up straight away, and no barking left to carry across the sites.

The vibe

A clean, functional stopover rather than a resort: cabins that guests describe as feeling near-new inside, flat sites with concrete pads and drive-through access for big rigs, plus a camp kitchen, BBQ areas, free Wi-Fi, a pool and a hot tub. Managers get regular mentions for being helpful. It suits an overnight leg on a long drive better than a week-long base.

Worth knowing

Dubbo Regional Council keeps a set of designated leash-free areas, generally open around the clock, including fenced spaces at South Dubbo Parkland on Palmer Street and the Wheelers Lane and Kester Leonard reserves. Dogs must be under the effective control of someone aged 16 or over, leashed on entering and leaving the zone, with a limit of three dogs per handler, and off-leash is never allowed on sporting ovals or playgrounds.

For the morning walk, the Tracker Riley Cycleway threads along the Macquarie River on-leash, and the fenced South Dubbo Park is the place for a proper off-lead run. If Midstate is full, NRMA Dubbo Holiday Park is the other pet-friendly caravan option in town.
