Lake Douglas Recreation Reserve

Lake Douglas Recreation Reserve at Binduli, about 15 minutes southwest of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, is a free 72-hour goldfields stopover that genuinely allows dogs. It is a practical, no-frills base for travellers crossing Western Australia with their dogs in tow.

The rules. Dogs must be restrained on a leash at all times and stay within designated campground areas. Collect waste immediately and dispose of it in the refuse areas provided. City Rangers patrol the site and can issue move-on directions for non-compliance, so follow the leash rules and keep your dog under control.

The campground. The reserve is a free, open rest area with gravel and bush surrounds beside a usually-dry salt lakebed. It is popular with caravans and motorhomes, and the open, flat terrain makes for straightforward on-lead walks. Facilities are limited to long-drop toilets and picnic tables. There is no potable water, no showers and no electricity. Fires are not permitted at any time and portable generators are forbidden. The ground is very hard, so bring sturdy tent pegs if you are pitching an awning or tent.

Getting there. Access is off the Great Eastern Highway near the Coolgardie-Esperance Highway junction, with easy 2WD access suitable for caravans, camper trailers and motorhomes. Watch for the "72 Hour Rest Stop" signage into the gravel area.

Heat, water and hazards. The lake is usually a dry salt lakebed, but if water appears after heavy rain it may be salty or contain bacteria. Do not let dogs drink from it. Natural shade is extremely limited, so bring your own shade and ample fresh water for your dog. Snakes are active in warmer months, so keep dogs on the tracks and steer clear of the bush margins.

When to go. Aim for late autumn through early spring, when the goldfields climate is manageable for dogs. Summer heat here is intense and the lack of shade makes the site tough going. For off-camp exploration, Centennial Park in Kalgoorlie offers large flat on-lead walking, and Mount Charlotte Scenic Lookout has dog-friendly walks with mine views. The Kalgoorlie visitor centre at 316 Hannan St can advise on local trails.
