Alice Springs Tourist Park

Alice Springs Tourist Park sits on Larapinta Drive at Araluen, a family-run caravan park shaded by mature trees with powered sites, a camp kitchen and a pool. Dogs are welcome on the caravan and camping sites, which makes it a practical base for touring Central Australia with a dog, as long as you know which areas are off limits before you roll in.

The policy splits down accommodation lines. Dogs are permitted on powered caravan and tent sites, but generally not inside the standard cabins or villas, so travelling campers and caravanners are the core dog-friendly audience. Management approval is required before arrival, a deposit or pet bond may be taken at check-in, and every dog must stay on a lead and under supervision across the park at all times. The pool, playground, BBQ areas and camp kitchen are all no-go zones. Gates are locked overnight, which helps if your dog is a wanderer. Confirm the approval and any bond when you book rather than at the boom gate.

This suits calm, leash-trained dogs travelling in a van or tent. If your dog needs off-leash time to settle, plan it around town rather than the park itself.

Exploring the Red Centre with a dog

Here is the catch most first-timers miss: Tjoritja / West MacDonnell National Park, including Simpsons Gap, Ellery Creek Big Hole and Ormiston Gorge, prohibits pet dogs entirely, and so does Standley Chasm. For a proper day out with the dog, Owen Springs Reserve south-west of town allows dogs in the area south of the Waterhouse Range, entered and exited via the southern entrance, with camping at Redbank Waterhole. Closer to the park, the walking paths along the Todd River are the standard early-morning on-lead route, and Alice Springs Town Council maintains several designated leash-free parks around the suburbs.

A couple of Araluen and East Side options worth a stop: Yaye's Cafe is the same-suburb coffee stop, and Ross Park Dog Park over in East Side gives your dog a proper run after a long day of driving.
