Ross Park Dog Park

Ross Park Dog Park, known locally as Ross Smith Dog Park, is a wide grassy off lead field at 5A Lindsay Avenue in East Side, a short ride from the Alice Springs CBD across the Todd River. Entry is free and the ground is genuinely open, with room for a proper run, but the fencing does not close every side.

Max: plenty of shade under the trees, but check the open boundary before trusting a new dog off lead.

The dog setup

The park runs as an off lead area with partial fencing, so it suits dogs with solid recall rather than escape prone ones. Walk the boundary with a new dog before you unclip. There are no separate zones for large and small dogs, so confident, sociable dogs get the most out of it. Established trees throw useful desert shade and a few play obstacles sit around the field. Waste bag dispensers are usually stocked, and toys are part of the local routine.

Worth knowing

Come self sufficient. There is no water fountain, no seating and no lighting after dark, so pack a water bowl and time your visit for daylight. Council rules require effective control at all times, and Alice Springs rangers can direct you to leash up if a dog is not responding to commands. Given the unfenced side, that control requirement is not a formality here.

Getting there and parking

The park sits on Lindsay Avenue in East Side, close to the town centre, with free parking nearby. It is also walkable from the CBD on foot or by bike via the paths that cross the Todd River.

While you're out there

Early morning and late afternoon are the cooler, quieter windows, which matters through the Centre's warmer months. Afterwards, Page 27 Cafe in the CBD keeps outdoor tables for dogs, and Watertank Cafe in Ciccone has a big outdoor area with a relaxed feel.
