Gillen Dog Park

Gillen Park is a suburban off-leash reserve on Mueller Street in Gillen, a residential suburb close to the Alice Springs town centre. It is an open, unfenced space managed by Alice Springs Town Council where dogs run free during set hours only, so it suits locals with reliable recall rather than owners wanting a secure yard.

The dog setup

Off-leash exercise is permitted in two daily windows: 5am to 8am and 5pm to 8pm. Outside those hours your dog must be leashed. Even during the windows, the dog has to stay under effective control, and council rangers can require a dog to be leashed if it is not. There is no fencing, so the boundary is your recall, and the playground on the park is off limits to dogs.

The reserve is open running space with shade trees around the edges. Bring your own water and bags; this is a suburban park rather than a serviced dog facility.

Worth knowing

Gillen actually holds a cluster of time-restricted off-leash reserves, including Chalmers Park, Day Park and Flynn Drive Oval, all within a few blocks, so the morning and evening windows can be spread across different parks. If you need a fully fenced alternative, the Rotaract Park fenced dog park in Braitling is a short drive away, and the Ross Park dog park covers East Side.

Max: desert town, so the hours make sense. We do the 5am window before the heat and skip the middle of the day entirely.

Getting there and parking

Gillen sits just off the Stuart Highway a few minutes from the Alice Springs CBD. Street parking is the norm for reserves like this, with a short walk to the off-leash area. Check council signage for the current hours before a first visit.

When to go

The two off-leash windows are the whole point, and in summer the morning one is the safe pick: Central Australian heat between midday and late afternoon risks heat stress and burnt paw pads even on lead. Winter afternoons are comfortable right through the evening window.
