Swell Mullaloo Beach sits right at the Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club, looking straight out over the Indian Ocean. It is a relaxed all-day cafe-restaurant with a genuinely dog-friendly deck, and the view is the reason to choose it over somewhere inland.

Dog access. Dogs are welcome on the outdoor alfresco deck at the front, which faces the ocean and is partly covered. It is a proper bring-your-dog spot rather than an afterthought, but the deck is small relative to demand and fills up fast on weekends. Dogs need to stay leashed and settled at your table.

Water and treats. Staff are generally accommodating, but bring your own water bowl to be safe, on-the-day availability is not guaranteed.

Known for. Ocean and sunset views from the deck, Swell eggs benedict, beer-battered fish and chips, and a good pavlova. It opens early for coffee and breakfast and runs later for dinner Thursday to Sunday, closing earlier Monday to Wednesday. Confirm current hours before you head down, especially on weeknights.

Get there early on a weekend if you want the dog-friendly deck, it is the busiest seating in the place and books out fast once the sun starts dropping.

Getting there. Swell is at 11 Oceanside Promenade, Mullaloo. Free parking is available at the Surf Life Saving Club car park and along Oceanside Promenade, and it is directly on the beachfront walking path.

Nearby with the dogs. The Mullaloo dog exercise area is a short walk north towards Ocean Reef for an off-leash run, and the paved coastal path in front of the cafe runs for kilometres either way for an easy leashed walk. Tom Simpson Park nearby has open grass if your dog needs to burn energy after the meal.

Best visited outside peak weekend brunch and sunset windows if you want a relaxed sit with the dog rather than a wait for the deck.
