Greenhill Wines Cellar Door & Restaurant Hester

Greenhill Wines is a boutique estate at 1016 Greenhill Road, Summertown, about 13 minutes from the Adelaide city edge, with the cellar door and terrace looking over the family's Pinot Noir and Chardonnay blocks in the Piccadilly Valley. It is a relaxed, family-run stop rather than a formal winery, and visiting dogs are welcome in the outdoor areas while a resident winery dog, Piero, patrols the deck.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome on the balcony and around the outdoor seating and lawn areas, on a lead. With a resident dog on site, a socialised dog settles here far more easily than a possessive one. Ask staff for a water bowl on arrival and mention the dog when you book, because the outside tables are the ones that go first on a fine weekend.

Max: put the tasting flight on the shaded end and let the dog claim the sunny patch, everyone wins.

Worth knowing

The cellar door runs Friday to Sunday, 12pm to 6pm with last tasting at 5pm, and closes on extreme or catastrophic fire danger days in the fire season, worth remembering on hot summer hills days. Restaurant Hester, the lunch side of the operation, is flagged as reopening soon on the venue's site at the time of writing, so check ahead if the plan is a full meal rather than a tasting plate; bookings have run through the venue's online reservation page or by phone.

Getting there and parking

Greenhill Road climbs out of the city through the hills, and the estate has free on-site parking. The venue is accessible, including parking and bathrooms.

Close by with the dogs

For a second stop on a hills day, Patch Kitchen & Garden and Miss Perez Kitchen & Bar are both dog-friendly eats a short drive away in Stirling, and Wright Road Fenced Dog Park gives the dog an off-lead run before the drive home.
