General Public Food Co - Scarborough

General Public Food Co is a relaxed cafe-bar in the small shopping complex at 5/19 Doric Street, Scarborough, a few blocks back from the beachfront. It opens from 6am, which makes it one of the better early options for dog owners: walk the dog on the coast, then swing in for brunch without the midday crush. The kitchen runs through to 9pm most nights, 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor terrace and front seating, not inside (service dogs excepted). Staff are used to dogs coming off the beach and water bowls are generally put out. Keep your dog leashed and on the ground rather than on the chairs; the terrace is compact, so a settled dog is an easy fit here.

On the plate

The signature is sourdough pizza: long-fermented bases with toppings like beef brisket, prosciutto and prawn, plus vegetarian and vegan options. Alongside that there is a solid brunch menu, tacos, salads and the cinnamon scrolls that give locals a reason to be there at opening time. WA-made drinks and local beers on tap cover the afternoon-to-evening side of the day.

Getting there and parking

There is a free car park directly in front and free street parking on the surrounding blocks, so it is an easy in-and-out with a dog in the car. The entrance is wheelchair accessible, and the complex is level all the way to the terrace tables.

Max: Terrace seat before 8am, a water bowl before I even sat down, and the distinct smell of someone's brisket pizza on the horizon. Good mornings start here.

Close by with the dogs

Abbett Park Reserve has a fenced off-leash run a short walk away, and Peasholm Dog Beach is a quick drive south for a swim.
