Joe's Henley Beach

Joe's sits right on the Esplanade at Henley Beach, a beachfront cafe-restaurant with a bright, Mykonos-style look and a front deck aimed straight at the water from the corner of South Street and the Esplanade. It is one of the better-known sunset spots on this stretch, and it is genuinely set up for dogs on its outdoor decking.

Dogs on the deck

Dogs are welcome on the partly covered front decking and the footpath-side outdoor seating, not indoors, which is standard under SA food rules. The deck faces the beach, so it is a real view rather than a back corner. Water bowls are generally on hand, though carry your own on a hot summer day to be sure.

What's on the menu

The all-day menu leans coastal: Coffin Bay oysters, kingfish ceviche, King George whiting, fish tacos and fish and chips sit alongside brunch staples like the slow pork benny and smashed avocado. The bar covers coffee through cocktails, and the Aperol spritz is a fixture at sunset. It is a lively, high-energy setting rather than a quiet one, so a calm dog fares best at peak times.

Getting there and parking

Street parking runs along the Esplanade and nearby streets but gets competitive on weekends and through summer. Walking in along the coastal pathway is the easier approach if you are already out with the dog.

The beach rules

The foreshore and coastal path are right there for a leashed walk. On the sand, City of Charles Sturt rules apply: during daylight saving, dogs must be on leash (maximum 2 metres) from 10am to 8pm across the foreshore, including sand and shallow water, and off leash under effective control outside those hours. Paved paths and footpaths stay on leash year round. Check the signage at your access point.

Make a day of it
