The Local Canteen

The Local Canteen is a small, casual cafe on Military Road, a few minutes back from the Henley Beach foreshore. It is the kind of neighbourhood spot you fold into a morning walk rather than a destination in its own right, and the dog-relevant point is straightforward: the outdoor footpath tables are where dogs are welcome.

The dog setup. Dogs are welcome at the footpath tables out front, not inside, which is standard for cafes under SA food rules. The tables sit on the pavement, so it is a people-watching setup rather than a private courtyard; a well-settled dog does better here than a bouncy one. Getting there. It is on Military Road with street parking there and on side streets, though it turns over quickly on sunny weekends. The foreshore is a two to three minute walk away, so walking in is easy.

Nearby with the dogs. The Henley Beach foreshore and coastal path are a short walk down. On the sand, City of Charles Sturt rules apply: dogs on-lead 10am to 8pm during daylight saving, off-lead outside those hours. Check the signage where you access the beach.

When to go. Weekday mornings are the calmest window. It gets busy on fine weekends, so an earlier coffee means a footpath table and a quieter walk after.
