The Local Canteen

The Local Canteen, or TLC as locals call it, is the corner-store coffee shop a step back from the Henley Square bustle, built for quick, quality brunch on the run. Footpath tables out front are where dogs are welcome, and the two-minute stroll to the foreshore makes it an easy fold-in stop on a coastal morning walk.

The dog setup

Dogs take the footpath tables out front, not the indoor room, which is standard under SA food rules. It is a pavement setup on a working corner, so a well-settled dog does better here than a bouncy one, and the smaller, quieter room suits dogs who find the Esplanade strip too much. Staff have a friendly reputation and water is usually around, but pack your own bowl to be certain.

Worth knowing

The coffee is the point: a custom Henley Blend roasted with local outfit Elementary Coffee, poured hot or as nitro cold brew, with the acai bowls served on tap. New York-style toasties, bagels, pastries and doughnuts from Butter & Toast fill out the cabinet, and the packaging is fully compostable. Doors open 7am daily with trade wrapping early afternoon, so it is a morning-and-lunch venue, and weekday mornings are the calm window.

Getting there and parking

You will find it at 1/32 Main Street, Henley Beach, just down from Henley Square. Street parking on Main Street and the surrounding blocks turns over quickly on sunny weekends, so the reliable play is parking a few streets back and walking in along the foreshore path.

Close by with the dogs

The Henley foreshore and coastal path are a couple of minutes down the hill; on the sand, City of Charles Sturt rules apply, on lead 10am to 8pm during daylight saving and off lead outside those hours, so check the signage at your access point. The off-lead sand at West Beach Dog Beach is the proper run south, and on the same strip Sunnyside Cafe has the beachfront deck and Luma Coffee Club covers the quieter coffee option.
