Yum Sing Cairns Restaurant

Yum Sing is a family-run Cantonese and yum cha restaurant on Lake Street in the Cairns CBD, and it has stated plainly on its own socials that it is pet friendly. The deal is simple: dogs join you in the outdoor seating rather than the indoor dining room, which makes this one of the few CBD spots where you can settle in for yum cha with the dog at your feet.

The dog setup

The restaurant's own posts invite four-legged diners, with the welcome extending to the footpath and deck seating out front. Outdoor space is limited, so mention the dog when you book or call ahead to lock in an outside table, and bring a portable water bowl because the Cairns heat does not negotiate. Best suited to a calm dog happy to sit through a proper lunch service.

The food and the vibe

This is a casual, quick-turnaround Cantonese kitchen rather than a white-tablecloth affair. The yum cha is the draw: dim sum, shao mai, dumplings, gyoza and green onion pancakes, plus staples like honey chicken and laksa. Lunch runs 11am to 2:30pm Tuesday through Sunday, closed Mondays, so this is a midday move; there is no dinner service to plan around.

Getting there and parking

Find it at 183 Lake Street, a few blocks back from the Esplanade in the central CBD. Street parking nearby is metered and busy at peak lunch hours, so allow a few minutes to land a spot within walking distance.

Close by with the dogs

The Cairns Esplanade is an easy walk east for an on-lead stroll along the waterfront boardwalk after lunch. For a proper off-lead run, the fenced Card Avenue Park fenced dog park at Manunda and the Bunny Jarrett Park off-leash area at Whitfield are both short drives away. Lillipad Cafe is a nearby city cafe option for the next morning's coffee, and Hemingway's Brewery at the wharf is the other dog-friendly sit-down choice in the CBD.
