Garuma Breakfast Restaurant & Cafe

Garuma is a family-owned all-day breakfast cafe on Shute Harbour Road in the heart of Airlie Beach, and one of the town's genuinely dog-friendly eating options. The outdoor patio takes leashed dogs, the kitchen runs from 6:30am, and it has become the name locals hand over when visitors ask where to get good coffee with the dog along.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome in the outdoor patio seating out front, on leash and beside the table; the indoor dining room is not open to pets. Staff are accommodating with four-legged regulars, but bring your own water bowl. Early morning is the sweet spot: from the 6:30am open through mid-morning you have the best chance of a shaded patio table before the breakfast rush stacks up.

Worth knowing

The menu is all-day breakfast and lunch, scratch-made: a big breakfast with marinated mushrooms and hash brown, bacon and egg rolls, smashed avocado, potato rosti and a halloumi stack, plus build-your-own omelettes. There are solid vegan and vegetarian choices, homemade pies and sausage rolls from the counter, and lunch runs to burgers and fish and chips. Coffee is the thing locals rate, with smoothies alongside. Service is quick, so the patio turns over briskly.

Getting there and parking

Garuma sits at 346 Shute Harbour Road, on the main road into town. Street parking is available but tight at peak breakfast hours, and the cafe is a short walk from the town centre and the lagoon parklands.

Close by with the dogs

The lagoon parklands are a short stroll for an on-leash walk, though dogs are strictly kept out of the swimming lagoon itself. For an off-leash run, Whitsunday Regional Council permits dogs off-leash at the eastern end of Shingley Beach, and Boathaven Beach has a morning-only window from 5:30am to 8:30am. For a second coffee stop, Rufus & Co. Cafe and BOHO cafe are both in town.
