Hope and Anchor

The Hope and Anchor is an 1888 corner pub on Given Terrace in Paddington that treats the courtyard as dog territory. Bring the leash, walk through to the outdoor side, and you have one of the better pints in the inner north-west waiting for you.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome across the outdoor courtyard and the side decking, which covers most of the seating that matters on a sunny afternoon. Inside the pub is people-only, so plan on the outdoors every visit. Keep your dog on-lead and settled around other tables; the regulars here expect a well-mannered dog under the chair, not one working the room. Water bowls are usually around but not guaranteed, so pack a portable one if your dog runs hot.

Max: claimed the shady deck corner, got a pat from the bar staff, and slept through two rounds.

The vibe

This is a proper old pub rather than a renovated one: exposed brick, low light, an open fire in winter and a leafy courtyard for everything else. The kitchen leans hearty, with burgers (Wagyu, halloumi and mushroom among them), fish and chips and British pub snacks. The pour is the headliner though, with a Guinness that people cross suburbs for, backed by a wide craft beer, gin and wine list. Live music turns up some evenings, which suits easygoing dogs better than nervous ones.

Getting there and parking

Free street parking runs along Given Terrace and the side streets, but it thins out badly on Friday and Saturday nights, so arrive early or walk. Brisbane City Council buses stop along Given Terrace, and the pub sits an easy stroll from the Latrobe Terrace village strip.

Close by with the dogs

The Neal Macrossan Park fenced dog park is a two-minute walk up the road, ideal for burning energy before an unhurried lunch. Jozo and Apache Salute both do dog-friendly coffee nearby, and the Normanby Hotel is a short drive if you are making a crawl of it.

Worth knowing

Weeknights and weekend afternoons are the calm windows if your dog prefers space; evenings peak hard and the street parking goes with them. Hours run early to late most days, with later closes on Friday and Saturday.
