The Pig & Whistle

The Pig & Whistle does pub classics at a scale most hinterland kitchens cannot match: a beef and Guinness pie worth the detour, chicken parmas, calamari and a ploughman's platter for the pickers. The grounds are the real draw, with lawned gardens, a big beer garden and live music on weekends that turns a long lunch into an afternoon. It sits on Purves Road between Red Hill and the winery strip, so it works as either the destination or the pit stop.

The gardens give a dog room to settle away from foot traffic, and staff are reported to be easy about water bowls, though bringing your own is never a mistake. If a live music afternoon is running, expect more noise, more people and more dogs than a quiet Wednesday, which some dogs love and others would rather skip.

Hours run from 11am Wednesday to Sunday, with Thursday through Sunday trading into the evening and Wednesday wrapping at 4pm; Monday and Tuesday are closed. Parking is on site. The kitchen leans hearty, so a shared ploughman's plate plus a pie covers most appetites without needing a second round.

Just up the hill, Green Olive at Red Hill pairs the paddock to plate lunch with its own farm setting, and the Red Hill Rail Trail suits the walk before the pie.
