Scentsory Garden - Dog Sensory Garden

The Scentsory Garden is a small, fully fenced dog sensory garden on Todville Street in Woodville West, part of the Frank Mitchell Park reserve and run by the City of Charles Sturt. It is built for sniffing, not sprinting: a planted garden of dog-safe, fragrant species where dogs explore slowly by nose rather than wrestling with a crowd.

The dog setup

The space is enclosed and designed for one or two dogs at a time, so it suits dogs who find a standard dog park overwhelming. Charles Sturt recommends it for fully vaccinated puppies, older or arthritic dogs, and dogs recovering from surgery who need low-impact mental enrichment. Check both gates on the way in and out, as it uses a secure entry system, and stay with your dog the whole time.

Worth knowing

Rough play is discouraged here. The council is explicit that this is a quiet exploration zone, and points high-energy chasers towards conventional dog parks instead. Outside the fenced garden, dogs stay on lead around the reserve, and must be on a lead of two metres or less within five metres of the playground. Pick up waste and use the bins provided. Water on site is limited, so bring your own bowl.

Max: ten minutes of sniffing tires a dog out like a long walk. If your dog is nervous, senior or on post-op rest, this small garden will do more for them than any big off-leash park.

Getting there

The garden sits off Todville Street within the Woodville West reserve, with street parking in the surrounding blocks. It is open around the clock and free, and the wider reserve has a playground, ovals and paths.

Close by with the dogs

For proper running, St Clair Pooch Park and Tedder Reserve Pooch Park are both fully fenced with agility gear a short drive away. Numero 5 Cafe is around the corner on Trimmer Parade, and Rival Brothers Coffee Roasters in Cheltenham keeps water bowls out for dogs.
