Rathdowne Community Fenced Dog Park

Rathdowne Community Fenced Dog Park is a secure, double-gated off-leash area in Wollert's Rathdowne/Olivine estate, open 24 hours and serving one of Melbourne's fastest growing northern corridors. It is a genuine fenced run rather than a shared reserve with a token off-leash corner, which is the main reason to choose it over the open parks nearby.

The dog setup

The perimeter is fully fenced with double-gated airlock entries on the east and west sides. The ground splits into two characters: half open grass lawn for flat-out running, half wood-chip base under established gum trees with large rocks and logs scattered through for dogs that like to sniff and climb rather than sprint. There is a water tap, benches and some natural shade, though the open grass sections are exposed on hot days.

There is no separate small-dog zone here, so owners of small dogs should go in eyes-open at busy times. Dogs are off-leash only inside the fence and back on lead in the surrounding streets and reserves, and handlers stay inside with their dogs under voice control. Leash and remove any reactive dog straight away. Waste bags are usually stocked at the gate but carry your own as backup, and it is worth eyeballing the latches and fence line yourself before letting a dog loose, since wear and tear is normal in a park this heavily used.

Max: no small-dog section here. If your little one is overwhelmed by big, fast dogs, aim for the weekday morning lull rather than the weekend scrum.

Worth knowing

Being new and popular, the grass turns worn and muddy in wet weather, typical for a community park carrying this much traffic. The 24-hour access is the upside for shift workers and early risers.

Getting there and parking

The park sits in the Olivine estate, reachable via Donnybrook Road or Epping Road, with free street parking along Voyager Drive and the surrounding bays. There is no station in Wollert; Donnybrook is the closest, a five to seven minute drive. Bike paths connect through the estate if you are walking or riding in.
