Piney Lakes Dog Play Park

Piney Lakes Dog Play Park is the fully fenced, dual-gated off-leash facility inside Piney Lakes Reserve in Winthrop, run by the City of Melville. What sets it apart from an ordinary fenced run is the zoning: a separate section for small and timid dogs, a dedicated agility enclosure with Australian-made equipment, and a large all-dogs area, all set among mature trees with sand and grass underfoot. It is a park people drive to, not just a park they walk to.

The dog setup

Dogs run off-leash inside the fenced play park; once through the gates into the wider reserve, leads go back on except in other designated exercise zones. Gates are dual-gated, and lower gates make the entrances wheelchair accessible. Dogs are not permitted inside the adjacent sensory playground, the conservation area or the northern bushland, where on-leash walking is confined to sealed paths.

Each section has water fountains with dog bowls, log features and sandpits to dig in, shaded seating under established trees, and bins with bag dispensers, though carrying your own bags as backup is still sensible.

Max: The small dog section can feel tight when it is busy, so if your dog is shy or small, aim for a quieter weekday session rather than a weekend afternoon.

The vibe

Early weekend mornings and after-school weekday afternoons dodge the crowds. The sand surface drains well after rain, which keeps the park usable through winter, but it heats up in summer, so test the ground with your hand before committing to a long session. The owner crowd is friendly and social, and the playground, barbecues and walking tracks through the reserve make it a whole-family destination rather than a quick ball stop.

The play park sits within Piney Lakes Reserve, with free parking accessible off Murdoch Drive and further lots from Leach Highway near the eastern side of the reserve. Transperth buses run along both Murdoch Drive and South Street if you leave the car at home. Coffeeville at the Piney Lakes Ecohub is the closest coffee, right inside the reserve.
