Piney Lakes Dog Play Park is the fully fenced, dual-gated off-leash area inside Piney Lakes Reserve on Murdoch Drive, Winthrop, run by the City of Melville. It has separate sections for small dogs and for all dogs, agility equipment, and sand and grass underfoot, which is the main reason locals pick it over an open reserve for nervous or reactive dogs.

The rules. Dogs run off-leash inside the fenced play park, but need to be back on lead once you're out in the wider Piney Lakes Reserve, except in the other designated exercise zones. Gates are dual-gated to stop dogs slipping out while you're entering or leaving, and dogs are not allowed inside the adjacent destination playground. Bring your own bags as backup even though bins are provided.

What's there. Australian-made agility equipment, water fountains with dog bowls in each section, log features, shaded areas under mature trees, and seating for owners. Lower gates make the entrances wheelchair accessible.

Getting there. The park sits on the corner of Murdoch Drive and South Street, Winthrop, with parking off Murdoch Drive. Transperth buses run along both Murdoch Drive and South Street if you're leaving the car at home.

Nearby with the dogs. Coffeeville at Piney Lakes Ecohub is the closest coffee stop, right inside the reserve. Little Sweet Oaks in Winthrop Village Shopping Centre is a short drive away, with more options in Melville and Fremantle.

Max's takegerman shepherd
the small dog section can feel tight when it's busy, so if your dog is shy or small, aim for a quieter weekday session rather than a weekend afternoon.

Go early on weekends or after school pickup on weekdays to avoid the crowds. The sand surface drains well after rain but can get hot underfoot in summer, so check the ground with your hand before you commit to a long play session.
