Wandin East Recreation Reserve is a large, open off-leash area at 150 Hunter Rd, Wandin East, in the Yarra Ranges. The entire reserve is designated off-leash, giving dogs room to run across expansive grass with a quiet, rural feel. If you want wide-open space without the formality of a fenced dog park, this is the drawcard.
The rules. Dogs must be under effective voice control at all times. Keep dogs on-leash in the car park and near playground areas, and note that dogs are prohibited within 10 metres of playgrounds and barbeques. You must carry bags and pick up all dog waste. Dogs must also be on-leash during organised sporting matches.
What's there. Expect a gravel parking area with ample space, bench seating, and picnic tables. Several large, mature trees provide shade, and the open field is well-suited to fetch. Facilities are limited: there is no dog-specific fencing and no water fountain mentioned in council information. Bring your own water.
Getting there. By car, the reserve sits off the Warburton Highway and Don Valley Road, via Hunter Road. Public transport is limited. The nearest train station is Lilydale, which requires a taxi or ride-share, or a connecting bus on Route 683 towards Warburton followed by a significant walk.
Make a day of it. The neighbouring reserves and eateries in nearby Seville pair well with a Wandin visit:
Watch out. The reserve is not fenced, so keep dogs away from nearby roads. Ground conditions can get muddy after heavy rain, so plan footwear accordingly.
Weekday mornings and early afternoons are the quietest times for a solitary walk. Saturday mornings bring local sport, so if the main oval is in use, head for the peripheral grassed areas near the tree line where there is still plenty of room.
