Wandin East Recreation Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Wandin East Recreation Reserve is a large, open community reserve in the Yarra Ranges at the corner of Old Baker Road and Monbulk-Seville Road. With expansive grass, mature trees for shade and a quiet rural feel, it is the sort of place you go for wide-open running space without the formality of a fenced dog park.

The dog setup

Off-leash exercise is allowed in the designated section of the reserve under Yarra Ranges Council rules, so check the on-site signage to confirm the boundary before unclipping. Within it, dogs must stay under effective control and respond promptly to your voice; carry a lead at all times and clip it back on when leaving the zone, near the car park and playground, or during organised sport. Dogs also need to stay clear of playgrounds and barbecues, and you are expected to carry bags and take away all waste.

Worth knowing

Amenities are simple: a gravel parking area with plenty of space, bench seating, picnic tables and large trees for shade. There is no fencing and no reliable water, so bring your own supply. The reserve is unfenced at its edges, so keep dogs away from the surrounding roads, and expect muddy ground after heavy rain. Weekday mornings and early afternoons are the quietest windows; Saturday mornings bring local sport, though the grassed areas near the tree line still leave room when the main oval is in use.

Max: a whole horizon of grass and only one ball. This is what weekends are for.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits off the Warburton Highway side of Wandin East, reached via Old Baker Road. Public transport is limited: Lilydale is the nearest train station, and the 683 bus towards Warburton is followed by a significant walk, so driving is the practical option.

Make a day of it

Pair the visit with Seville Recreational Reserve a few minutes down the road, or Lillydale Lake if you want a water-side walk. Carriage Cafe in Seville does a relaxed lunch, and Seville Estate pours Yarra Valley wine with dogs welcome outside.
