Newcastle Dog Off-Leash Area

The rules. This off-leash area sits on the eastern end of Nesca Parade in The Hill, Newcastle, often referred to locally as Nesca Park. It is a grassy, tree-lined space rather than sand or harbour frontage. Off-leash hours run sunrise to sunset under City of Newcastle rules, and dogs must be under effective control at all times. Owners are liable if their dog attacks a person or another animal. Keep dogs at least 10 metres from the children's playground, and note that dogs are not permitted on the nearby Newcastle Memorial Walk.

What's there. Open grass and mature trees give some shade, and there is enough room for dogs to run and socialise. The area is not fully fenced, so it suits dogs with reliable recall rather than escape artists. Public bins are on site, but it is worth bringing your own waste bags in case they run short.

Getting there. The park is on Nesca Parade in The Hill, close to Newcastle Beach and Newcastle East. Street parking nearby fills up on sunny weekends, so early mornings or weekdays are easier. It is also walkable from central Newcastle and reachable via Newcastle Light Rail, with Queens Wharf the nearest stop for a longer walk down.

Nearby with the dogs. Darby Street and The Hill have a handful of cafes with outdoor seating that welcome leashed dogs, and King Edward Park is a short walk away for a change of scenery. If you want sand and water instead of grass, Horseshoe Beach nearer the harbour is the council's suggested dog-friendly beach.

Go early on weekends if you want the grass to yourself. It suits confident dogs with solid recall more than nervous or escape-prone ones, given the lack of fencing.
