King Edward Park Off-leash Area

King Edward Park occupies the headland between Newcastle Beach and Bar Beach, and its leash-free zone is the designated grassed area at the top of the park: a big open sloping lawn with a full ocean outlook. It is an unfenced run in a heritage coastal setting, which makes it a good pick for dogs with solid recall and a poor one for bolters.

The dog setup

Off-leash activity is limited to the designated zone and, under City of Newcastle rules, is permitted between sunrise and sunset. Everywhere else in the park, including the formal gardens, landscaped paths and BBQ areas, dogs stay on lead. Dogs are not permitted on the Memorial Walk, which curls around the headland below, and must stay at least 10 metres from playground equipment. Dangerous or restricted dogs are barred from all leash-free zones. There is no dedicated dog water point, so bring a bowl; bins are provided across the park.

Max: read the signage before you unclip. The leash-free lawn ends well before the gardens and the cliff-side paths, and rangers do issue fines in the on-leash sections.

The vibe

Mid-morning on a weekday gives you the most room and the least passing foot traffic. The late afternoon weekend window is the busiest stretch, when picnickers spread across the lawns and the sun is directly on the open grass. Treat the unfenced boundary seriously: the park edges sit close to roadways, so a dog with patchy recall is a genuine risk here.

Getting there and parking

The park sits off York Drive in The Hill, reached via Ocean View Parade, with street parking along York Drive and a lower car park near the beach end. It is also an easy walk in along the Bathers Way coastal path from the city or Newcastle Beach.

Close by with the dogs

Horseshoe Beach at the harbour end of the city is Newcastle's off-leash beach and the natural pairing with a headland run. For coffee afterwards, East End Hub near the Royal precinct is a short stroll back towards town.
