Fitzsimons Reserve

Fitzsimons Reserve is a riverside parkland on Fitzsimons Lane in Templestowe, sitting in the habitat corridor that links Candlebark Park and Westerfolds Park along the Yarra. It is a nature-and-recreation spot rather than a dedicated dog park, with wetlands, picnic areas and mountain bike flow trails, so the off-leash rules are tighter than at a standard reserve.

The rules. Dogs must be on-leash within 15 metres of the shared trails and through the environmental areas, where keeping them under close control protects local wildlife. Off-leash is permitted only within the fenced sports ground and only when no event is in progress. Take your rubbish with you and confirm the current signage on arrival.

What's there. Toilets in the pavilion, picnic shelters with BBQs, a playground, and the bike flow trails. There is no drinking tap for dogs on-site, so bring your own water and bowl.

Getting there. On-site parking is off Fitzsimons Lane. The Main Yarra Trail runs through the western part of the reserve, so cycling in is easy; by public transport, buses run along Reynolds Road with a walk to the reserve.

When to go. Early weekday mornings are quietest. Weekends and sunny afternoons get busy with the playground and bike trails. Best suited to dogs happy on-leash who enjoy a riverside walk over open running.
