Tailem Bend Dog Park

Tailem Bend Dog Park is a fully fenced off-leash park on Railway Terrace, right beside the town rotunda and a short hop off the Dukes Highway. For anyone driving the Adelaide to Melbourne run with a dog in the back seat, this is the stop that actually works: real fencing, real shade and room to run, rather than a patch of grass next to a highway.

The dog setup

The park is fully fenced with a double-gated entrance, so dogs cannot slip out while you are coming or going, which matters with the highway traffic running through town. Inside, there is agility equipment for dogs that like a job, mature trees for shade, and grass that the council keeps in good order. Seating and picnic tables sit around the edges so you can watch rather than hover. The space is designated off-leash, with dogs under effective control at any time they are in the park. Outside this fence, every other park and reserve in the Coorong District requires dogs on a physical leash, so this is the one place in town your dog can be off lead legally.

Worth knowing

A rainwater tap covers the water bowl problem, but bring your own bowl anyway because council taps are not always fitted with one. The park is open around the clock and the council expects owners to stay with their dogs, clean up and remove any dog that gets aggressive without delay. Reviewers consistently mention the cleanliness and the layout, which is more than most highway towns can say about their dog park. It gets busiest around midday when the highway traffic peaks, especially on long weekends; early mornings and weekdays are quieter if your dog prefers space.

Getting there

The park sits on Railway Terrace at the Adelaide end of town, just off the Dukes Highway turnoff, with the rotunda as your landmark. Parking is free and off-road and there is room for caravans and rigs towing, which is half the reason this stop gets so much use from travellers.

Close by with the dogs

For an on-lead leg-stretcher, the tracks through Mowantjie Willauwar Conservation Park toward Wellington run through cypress pine and mallee, and Fred's Landing on the Murray gives you a flat riverside stroll with BBQs and toilets. If you are continuing on to Murray Bridge, both Johnstone Park and White Park are fenced off-leash options, and St Georges Bakehouse feeds the humans.
