Greenmeadows Gardens Dog Off Leash Area

Greenmeadows Gardens is a well-kept suburban park on the corner of Green Street and Milburn Grove in St Kilda East, with a dedicated off-leash section and a water tap that makes it a dependable regular walk rather than a big-day-out destination.

The dog setup

The grassy section north of Melby Avenue is the off-leash area, and per Glen Eira's dog walking rules it runs to a morning window of 6am to 9am, with dogs on lead at all other times and everywhere else in the gardens. Dogs stay on lead within twenty metres of the playground and picnic areas, and under effective control whenever the lead is off.

A water tap serves the off-leash section, waste bags and bins are provided, and benches line the sealed paths. The unsealed edges can turn muddy after rain, and the grounds include a small playground, a rotunda and some genuinely old trees. Historic canopy trees give both sections summer shade, and the whole reserve reads more manicured than your average suburban oval.

Pepsi: this is a six-to-nine club, and the regulars all know it. Arrive at seven and your dog gets twenty minutes of proper socialising with the same crew each morning, which is worth more to most dogs than a big empty park.

Worth knowing

Outside the morning window the gardens are an on-lead walk, and council officers do patrol time-based off-leash parks in Glen Eira. If you need an all-hours off-lead run, the nearby alternatives below are the better bet.

Getting there and parking

Street parking runs along Green Road, Milburn Grove and Lempriere Avenue. Tram 16 passes along Balaclava Road and buses 216, 219 and 220 stop close to the park, so it is an easy car-free visit from most of the east, and the gardens themselves are compact enough to cross in a couple of minutes.

Close by with the dogs

Alma Park East is the bigger off-leash option a short walk west, and Clarke Reserve gives another all-hours fenced option toward Elwood. Phoenician Cafe is the neighbourhood coffee stop after the circuit.
