Shell Cove Dog Park

Shell Cove Dog Park is the grassy, ocean-facing green space in the Waterfront Shell Cove marina precinct, and its main draw is the view: open water, passing boats and whales in season. But the name is misleading, and getting this straight before you arrive will save you a fine. The marina promenade and most of the immediate waterfront are on-leash; the council's signposted off-leash ground sits a short drive south along Bass Point Tourist Road.

Leash status

Dogs must be on-leash along the Waterfront Precinct promenade and boardwalks, and are not permitted to swim in the harbour or use the sandy beach by the marina. The designated off-leash zone under Shellharbour City Council runs along Bass Point Tourist Road, on the grassy reserve between The Shallows Coastal Reserve and the gravel loader, with dogs under effective control and a leash carried. A grass-only rule applies through much of this coastal edge to protect nesting shorebirds, so keep dogs out of the dunes and off the beach habitat, and do not let them chase or disturb wildlife. Dangerous and restricted dogs are barred from off-leash areas, rangers patrol, and droppings must be picked up. Check the signage where you park rather than assuming the grass in front of you is off-leash.

Worth knowing

Bag dispensers and bins are spaced along the boardwalks and paths, and there is bench seating facing the water. Do not count on a dog water station on the grass itself, so bring your own bottle and bowl. Early mornings, roughly 7 to 9am, and weekends are busiest along the promenade; weekday mornings are calmer for a quiet lead walk with the water views. Humpback season, roughly late autumn through spring, adds whale sightings off the headland.

Getting there

By car, come off Shellharbour Road into Cove Boulevard and use the marina town-centre parking for the promenade; the off-leash reserve is south along Bass Point Tourist Road. Premier Illawarra buses service Shell Cove, and Oak Flats station is a short drive or connecting bus away.

Close by with the dogs

For guaranteed fence-free-of-worry off-lead time, the Flinders fenced dog park has agility equipment nearby, and Flinders Beach adds an off-leash stretch of sand. Max: Read the sign at your car before you unclip. The waterfront looks like a dog park but the legal off-leash ground is at Bass Point, and rangers do check near the shorebird zones.
