Leaf Cafe & Co Shell Cove

Leaf Cafe & Co is a busy modern-Australian cafe at Shop 7/100 Cove Boulevard in the Shell Cove marina precinct, and for dog owners its appeal is location: it sits a few steps off the waterfront promenade, so coffee slots neatly into a loop around the harbour and the boat ramps. Dogs are welcome at the outdoor tables out front.

The dog setup

The outdoor seating on the wide footpath and patio in front of the cafe is where dogs go, on lead and tucked beside your table off the walkway; inside is service animals only, as with any food venue. Council rules for the harbour precinct also apply once you are strolling: dogs stay on leash around the waterfront, are not allowed to swim in the harbour or on the kids beach, so plan water play for the off-leash reserves instead. Staff have been known to hand out a puppuccino, but bring your own water bowl in case they are flat out, since weekends see the promenade at its busiest.

The vibe and the menu

Coffee is the headline, roasted in-house, alongside a broad brunch and lunch menu with vegetarian and vegan options. Regular orders include the breakky burger, fritters, a homemade crumpet and the mushroom omelette, and reviewers rate the hot chocolate for the kids-in-tow crowd. Hours run 6:30am to 3pm every day.

Getting there and parking

The precinct sits off Shellharbour Road at Shell Cove, south of Wollongong, with parking in the marina precinct's lots a short walk from the cafe. The promenade in front is flat and pram-and-dog friendly, connecting the cafes, the tavern and the water.

Close by with the dogs

For a leg stretch before or after, Shell Cove Dog Park is the suburb's own off-leash option under Shellharbour City Council rules, and the fenced run at Flinders Fenced Dog Park is the next suburb south. Darley Street Local in Shellharbour Village is the alternative coffee stop.
