Oak Flats Fenced Dog Park sits at the corner of Kingston Street and Moore Street, a flat, grassed, fully fenced off-leash park that Shellharbour City Council keeps open around the clock. With separate enclosures for big and small dogs, agility gear and recent upgrades, it is the most dependable secure option on this side of Lake Illawarra.

The dog setup

The park splits into a large dog section and a small dog area for dogs up to 15 kilograms, each entered through double gates so there is a buffer before any dog reaches the exit. There is a water tap for drinking, agility equipment with hurdles, weave poles and ramps, and bins for waste, though carry your own bags in case they run low. Shellharbour City Council has added internal connecting paths, extra seating and shade shelters, which helps on summer afternoons. Leash your dog in the surrounding streets and car park; supervision is on you the whole time inside.

The vibe

A friendly local crowd with dachshund meetups among the regular fixtures. Grass cover is good and trees throw shade over the benches, but there are no public toilets and no lighting, so after-dark visits rely on ambient light. Getting there and parking

The park sits off the Industrial Road and Creamery Road side of Oak Flats, with parking directly alongside on Kingston Street. Oak Flats station is five to ten minutes by car, so it is a drive-to park rather than a walk-from-the-train one.

Close by with the dogs

The lake foreshore paths make an easy on-leash wind-down after an off-lead session, and Windang dog beach is just up the lake for a swim day. When to go

Saturday and Sunday mornings and weekday mornings before work draw the crowds; weekday evenings from Tuesday through Friday and late weekend afternoons are quieter. Because the gates are always open, early or late visits suit nervous dogs that do better with fewer playmates.
