May Cowpe Reserve Dog Park

May Cowpe Reserve is a large open sports reserve on North Parade in Rooty Hill, with a 24-hour off-leash area spread across sprawling green space. It is a working sports ground that doubles as the suburb's main dog run, so the practical skill here is reading what else is on the fields.

The dog setup

The off-leash area operates around the clock under Blacktown City Council rules: your dog needs effective voice or hand control at all times, you must carry a leash, and restricted or declared dangerous breeds are not permitted off-leash. Pick up waste immediately, bins are on site.

When junior sport training or a match has the fields, give that section a miss and work the open space instead. The reserve is unfenced at the edges, so recall matters, though the sheer size means you can usually find a clear stretch even on busy afternoons.

The vibe

This is Western Sydney parkland doing double duty: touch football midweek, Saturday sport, and dog owners threading between it all. Tree cover gives shaded breaks along the margins, and the ground flattens out enough for proper ball work. Early mornings are the reliable quiet slot.

Because the off-leash designation runs to midnight, it also suits shift workers whose dog needs a run outside the usual 6am crowd. Bring your own water in summer, as the taps are tied to the sports amenity blocks and are not always open outside training hours. The playground sits well back from the main fields, so families and dog groups generally keep to their own corners.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits on North Parade in Rooty Hill, close to the railway station and the Rooty Hill town centre, with a free on-site car park next to the fields. The M4 and Westlink M7 are both short drives for anyone coming from further out.
