Greenwood Park is an open sports ground off Greenwood Avenue in Ringwood that doubles as a local off-leash spot. The defining catch: it is unfenced and borders open roads, so solid recall is the price of entry.

The rules. Dogs are off-leash here unless a formal sports match or training session is on, in which case they go back on lead. There is no perimeter fence, so your dog needs to be under reliable voice control at all times. Clean up after your dog and bring your own bags, as none are supplied on site.

The terrain. Mostly flat grass with good drainage, which keeps the mud down after rain. The open space suits big runners and a game of fetch.

What's there. A water tap is on the pavilion wall, with limited bench seating. There are no public toilets, and the nearby playground is separated from the off-leash area.

Getting there. Off Greenwood Avenue, reached easily from Maroondah Highway or EastLink. Street parking on Greenwood Avenue. It is roughly a 15 to 20 minute walk from Ringwood Station.

No fence and open roads close by, so I'd keep a nervous or distractible dog on lead until you know the recall holds here.

Quietest on weekday mornings and midday. Weekday evenings and weekend mornings draw the crowds, and it is best skipped entirely when cricket or football is being played.
