McIlwaine Park Off-leash Park

McIlwaine Park is a large open oval on the corner of Concord Road and Llewellyn Street in Rhodes, running down to the Parramatta River at Brays Bay. It is an unfenced, time-restricted off-leash area, and that single fact decides who it suits: dogs that come when called get a big, floodlit space for an evening or early-morning run; nervous bolters should stay on lead. The riverside setting and the lights make it one of the Inner West's better after-work options.

The dog setup

Dogs are off-leash before 9am and after 5pm, every day of the week, and on lead at all other times, under City of Canada Bay rules. The zone is an open area at the park's northern end near Llewellyn Street, with no fence and Concord Road on the doorstep, so effective control is essential. Keep dogs at least ten metres from the children's playground and barbecue areas, bin the droppings, and carry your own waste bags as the perimeter bins are general park bins. Water bubblers and dog bowls are on site.

Max: open oval, no fence, six lanes of Concord Road on the doorstep. Prove the recall before you unclip, and keep the lead on if you are not sure.

The vibe

The early-morning window and the post-5pm slot draw the regulars, and the floodlights keep the evening session going once the daylight thins out, which is the park's real trick in winter. Right on 5pm is the calmest way into the evening window, and things settle again after 7pm. Expect a mix of apartment-dweller dogs from the Rhodes towers plus sporting use on the oval at other hours.

Getting there and parking

Parking is off Llewellyn Street and along the surrounding streets, and it fills quickly in peak windows. Rhodes station is a 10 to 15 minute walk away heading east along Blaxland Road, and the park connects to the foreshore paths along the river for an on-lead extension. If a fence matters, Lower Phoenix Park Fenced Dog Park in the same suburb is the secure alternative.

Close by with the dogs

The wider park has toilets, electric barbecues, picnic tables, a playground and even a small free putt-putt course. After the run, Left of Field and Bare Witness are both waterside coffee options near the park, and Meadowbank Dog Beach is just up the river for a swim session.
