McIlwaine Park Off-leash Park

McIlwaine Park is a large, open sports oval on the corner of Concord Road and Llewellyn Street in Rhodes, running down to the Parramatta River. It is a time-restricted, unfenced off-leash area, so the deciding fact is recall: this is a floodlit oval by a busy road, brilliant for a big evening run but only for dogs that come when called.

The rules. Dogs are off-leash before 9:00am and after 5:00pm, seven days a week; on lead at all other times. The oval is not fully enclosed and sits beside Concord Road, so reliable voice control is essential to keep dogs off the road and away from wildlife. Keep dogs at least 10 metres from children's play equipment and barbecue areas. Clean up after your dog; perimeter bins are provided but carry your own bags. These are City of Canada Bay rules, so confirm the current hours on the council page before you rely on them.

What's there. Full floodlighting, which makes the oval one of the better lit evening options in the area, plus water bubblers and dog bowls. The wider park has public toilets, electric barbecues, picnic tables and a playground for the humans.

Getting there. Parking is off Llewellyn Street and fills quickly, so arrive early. The park connects to the Rhodes foreshore walking paths and is a 10 to 15 minute walk from Rhodes station, heading east along Blaxland Road and across Concord Road.

Nearby with the dogs. Left of Field is a short walk for a dog-friendly coffee on its covered patio, and the foreshore paths make an easy on-lead extension along the river.

The 6:30am to 8:00am and post-5:00pm slots are the busiest, and the floodlights make the evening window especially popular once daylight saving ends. If your dog is easily overwhelmed, aim for right on 5:00pm or after 7:00pm when it thins out. Best for confident, well-recalled dogs; not a spot for a nervous bolter.
