J.C. Donath Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

J.C. Donath Reserve is a big multi-use community reserve in Reservoir, reached off Cheddar Road, West Ruthven Street or Harringtons Lane. It is a local all-rounder: large sports ovals and open parkland with paved paths, an outdoor gym and a spread-out playground, and dogs are welcome off-lead across the designated open areas, main oval included.

The dog setup

This is an unfenced off-lead ground, not a dedicated enclosure. Darebin City Council's pets-in-parks rules apply: your dog stays under effective voice or hand control, you carry a lead the whole time, and you clip it back on within 10 metres of playgrounds, barbecues and picnic areas, or whenever organised sport or a community event is using the ground. Pick up after your dog; bins are on site and fines apply to dogs off-lead outside the designated areas.

Max: the ovals sit open to the surrounding paths and streets, so a dog with a bolt in them needs a lead until their recall is proven here.

What is on site

Benches, bins and drinking fountains, the outdoor gym, and a playground that spreads through the reserve rather than sitting in one corner. Because the play equipment is scattered, parts of the off-lead area sit closer to busier family zones than you might expect, so keep an eye on your surroundings. The ovals are the main draw: proper room for retrieves and running that smaller pocket parks cannot offer.

The vibe

Weekday early mornings and late afternoons are the busy windows for locals and the sporting clubs, and mid-morning or early afternoon midweek gives a nervous dog the most space. Weekend mornings fill with junior sport at certain times of year, when the on-lead rule around the active ground applies.

Getting there and parking

Street parking on the residential streets around Harringtons Lane and West Ruthven Street, and bus routes run within walking distance of the reserve.

Close by with the dogs

Lady Bower Cafe on Marchant Avenue and Gellibrand Cafe on Gellibrand Crescent are both neighbourhood coffee stops a few minutes away.
