Atkinson Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Atkinson Reserve, also listed as D.R. Atkinson Reserve, is a large open grassy reserve at 16-24 Argyle Street in Reservoir, with a sports field, a scatter of shade trees and a designated dog off-leash area across the open space. It is a local's park: quiet, roomy and unfenced, best for dogs with decent recall that just want a proper run without driving across town to a fenced compound.

The dog setup

The off-leash designation covers the open grass area, with dogs on lead everywhere else around the reserve. Darebin rules apply: keep your dog under effective voice or hand control, carry a lead at all times and clip it back on before leaving the area, and lead up within ten metres of playspaces or shared paths and thirty metres of barbecue areas. Dogs are also on lead whenever formal sport is in session on the field, so time your visit around the fixtures. Clean up and use the bins provided.

Pepsi: there is no dog water tap and the shade is thin. Bring water and pick your weather, especially in summer.

The vibe

This is a neighbourhood reserve rather than a dog-park destination, with the off-leash crowd sharing the space with footy and soccer on the field. It is busiest on weekday afternoons after school and work and on weekend mornings; weekday mornings are the quiet stretch. The playground sits in the southwest corner, so families and dog walkers coexist easily enough given the lead rules.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits near the corner of Argyle Street and Cheddar Road, with free street parking along Argyle Street. Buses 555 and 556 run along Cheddar Road, and Reservoir and Ruthven stations are both a moderate walk. In the wider neighbourhood, Edwardes Lake Park and its 1.6 kilometre lake loop are a short drive or a good warm-up walk.

Edwardes Lake Park Dog Off-Lead Area is the bigger local option for a water-adjacent run, and if your dog needs a fully enclosed space, Richards Reserve Fenced Dog Park at Coburg North is the closest fenced alternative.
