Ridley Oval Fenced Dog Park

Ridley Oval in East Orange gives you two parks in one visit: a compact fenced enclosure at the Caroline Street end for a guaranteed secure run, and the big open oval alongside it where dogs can stretch out properly once recall is trustworthy. It is a low-key local spot off McLachlan Street that rarely feels crowded.

The dog setup

The fenced section sits at the entrance end and suits smaller dogs, puppies and anyone still working on recall. Beyond it, the unfenced oval runs out towards the creek side and is designated off-leash under Orange City Council rules, provided your dog stays under effective control. When organised sport or training is running on the oval, leash up and keep clear of the play area. Waste bins are provided; water is not always reliable, so bring a bottle and bowl in the warmer months.

Max: stayed inside the fence until the soccer kids packed up, then got the whole oval to himself.

Worth knowing

Keep at least 10 metres from the playground and BBQ areas, and leash your dog moving between the car and the oval. Shade trees line parts of the ground and entry is accessible. Check the signage on sport days before letting your dog off; council maps confirm the oval's off-leash status outside of structured use.

Getting there and parking

The fenced area sits at the end of Caroline Street, off McLachlan Street near Edward Street in East Orange. Street parking is free and straightforward, with accessible spaces near the entry. The park is open around the clock, though the off-leash rules still apply at all hours.

Close by with the dogs

Machin Park's fenced dog area is a short drive up Gardiner Road if you want a second fenced option, and Bloomfield Reserve covers the other side of town. For the post-park coffee, Benson's Cafe and Oliver Brown in the centre are the easiest calls. When to go

Weekday mornings and early afternoons are quietest, which suits nervous dogs. Weekend mornings draw the regulars with their social dogs. In Orange's frosty winter mornings, midday sun is kinder to both of you.
