Mount Gambier's fenced off-leash dog area sits inside the Blue Lake Sports Park precinct, on the western side of the park behind the baseball diamonds. The City of Mount Gambier built it as a secure exercise space where dogs can run off-lead without straying onto the sporting ovals, and it has become the reliable pick for locals who want a fully enclosed run close to town.

The dog setup

The enclosure has separate zones for large and small dogs, so a cautious or smaller dog does not have to share space with big, boisterous play. Off-lead time is allowed only inside the fenced area, and dogs must stay under effective voice or hand control, with a maximum of two dogs per handler. In the wider sports park dogs are on lead, and they are not permitted on the sporting ovals or near the children's playgrounds. Picking up after your dog is mandatory, and the council is explicit that ongoing fouling problems are what keep the ovals off limits.

When to go

Weekend afternoons and weekday evenings draw the biggest crowds, which suits sociable dogs. For a quieter session, try a weekday late morning. The area is open around the clock, so early walkers have it mostly to themselves.
